I’m David Young and we’re looking at coaching someone on their “values”. Values are at the heart of so many other issues, that it’s always a worthwhile session because our values shape our goals, our decisions, and ultimately even our feelings of fulfilment. It’s a bit of a biggie in coaching really, but it’s not always obvious that “values” is the issue. So listen for the clues and remember there’s no such thing as a “throw away” line. Those seemingly innocent or insignificant little comments, the slips of the tongue or the jokes that a client sometimes makes are usually their unconscious, floating to the surface wanting to be noticed. Things like, “Who knows?” or “It’s all the same to me”, or “Whatever”. Always pause a client whenever you hear one of these remarks and ask them what that really means. And wherever a client is feeling lost or stuck, unable to make decisions or lacking clear purpose or direction, you can bet that coaching them on values will give them some clarity and help them with a transformational shift. So let me walk you through a great coaching session on values based on the work of John Demartini.
